Hi Duck838,

Thank you for joining the Bose Portable PA Community.

Snakehips has given you great information.

We have an article with illustrations here:

T8S to single L1 Model II

ST

I have hooked up using this illustration, and sound is "ok" but still lacks much of the bass. Any ideas?

Double checking.

Do you have an L1 Model II?

What bass module do you have; B1 or B2?

What are your inputs to the T8S?

Have you set up the gain staging as shown in this video?

What ToneMatch Presets are you using?

Thanks,

ST

Hello, and thank you!

So here is what I got. We recently upgraded from an old T1 Tonematch to the T8S because I needed more inputs. We are trying to use it with the L1 model II with a B1 bass module. Currently the only input we have been testing with is running sound off my laptop. Traditionally our usage is for a company wide "rally" where we would have a powerpoint presentation some with sound coming off a computer, and several microphones. The preset I have found which comes closest to what I think I'm trying to do is for DJ/Playback high volume music. The sound quality in general seems very distant, almost underwater at times, and lacks pretty much all the bass that we used to have on the old set up.

Adding, this is not anything I've gone to school for or had any type of formal education. I am simply learning this all on my own as I go along, so I definitely don't have much knowledge on it. Hence, why I'm here asking for help.

Hello ST,

I am using a 3.5mm audio cable to the computer, with a 1/4" TRS adapter into input 1. In the past with the T1 it has worked fine, but is there another way I could be doing it? Ports on my laptop are limited to USB, HDMI, USB-C, and the 3.5mm headphone.

I've also noticed that even though I have my connection going from the R-Out on the T8S to the analog input on the L1, I am not using a balanced cable. Could that have anything to do with it?

Hi hberube,

Thanks for the added information. This solves the mystery.

This cable works (sort of) with the T1 into channel 1. You may not have noticed, but you were not hearing the right side of the stereo signal.

This cable will not work with the T8S because all the inputs are balanced. A stereo signal is not compatible with a balanced input.  Anything that is panned up the middle (like bass and kick drum) tends to be cancelled out by the balanced connection.

Coming back to the T1 for a moment. The 1/4" inputs on T1 channels 1, 2, 3 are not balanced. You would not have had the cancellation issue. But at the same time, you were not getting both sides of the stereo signal.

You can use USB -> please see USB B from PC connection

OR

the 3.5mm headphone output.  Use a cable like this:

You can connect that to any two of channels 1-8 or channels 9/10. Please see -> Aux Inputs.

That isn't the cause of the lack of bass; we've covered that above. However, you will have a more robust signal (higher signal to noise ratio) if you use a balanced cable.

If you haven't updated your firmware since late November please see:
T4S/T8S ToneMatch® Mixer Firmware Updates

Does that help?

Ok thank you. I just tried with the USB B and the computer says it's sending the audio to USB, and the lights all flash accordingly on the mixer, but no sound is coming out. I am going to try to get my hands on that other cable and see if I have better luck.

Another thing I've noticed is when I go into prefs and select the L1 Stand it says I'm not connected, even though I am. Not sure what that could mean.

That's odd. The default routing is USB B from computer directly to the master output. Please double check your routing options as described in this article: USB B from PC connection

Sure, please tell us how that works for you.

That's correct. The L1 Model II system status only applies to the T1 and T4S when connected through the ToneMatch port. It's not applicable for the T8S unless you're doing a firmware update to the Model II Power Stand  (there's no need to do that with your system).
