Let's talk about the L1® Portable Line Array Systems

I provided sound for a group this past weekend, and the bass player had a note that was sustaining on its own - hard to play that note. He identified this as a B-flat.

I understand that the parametric EQ would have helped to tone the one troublesome note. How would I use the parametric EQ to do that?

Here is one method to eliminate a boomy note

a) set the level of the para EQ to a cut, say -10 dB
b) set the width to fairly narrow, say .25 ocatves
c) start with a rough estimate of the offending frequency and then move the frequency around until the offending note gets tamed best
d) you can press on the level control to toggle between on and off which gives you a direct A/B so you can judge the effect better

Once you have centered on the freqeuncy you adjust the level and width to taste.

Estimating the frequency:
Low octave of the bass is from 40 Hz to 80 Hz (E1 to E2), A1 is at 55 Hz
Low octave on the guitar is from 80 Hz to 160 Hz (E2 to E3), A2 is at 110 Hz
2nd octave on the guitar is from 160 Hz to 320 Hz (E3 to E4), A3 is at 220 Hz

With Hilmar's and Chuck's techniques, you don't need to know which frequency is the problem. But for those who like to know more...

This Frequencies of Music chart is also a handy tool. I have seen a variation of this one that referenced the fundamental frequencies of instruments and voices against a 1/3 octave EQ.

Musical note frequencies for Guitar and Piano

Keep in mind that an offending frequency is not necessarily the fundamental frequency being played. Often the offending frequency is a harmonic frequency that lies above the fundamental note: you play an open A on a six string guitar, fundamental frequency 110.0 Hz, offending frequency could be 220, 440, 880 Hz...

Don't worry. Just follow Hilmar or Chuck's procedures. Follow it step by step in the comfort of your living room before a gig so you can get comfortable with the technique in a no pressure environment. Then if the need ever arises, you can impress yourself and others alike!
Actually, what's really nice about taking a little small bit of time and associating a few numbers with a few notes will do the following for you:

1) Help you better understand with other pieces of gear as to what's wrong / how to fix eq challenges;

2) Appreciate the benefits of zEQ even more.
