Hello Folks:

I am honored to debut here a video we've made with 19-Grammy Winner Pat Metheny.

Pat Metheny On Tour with the Bose L1

Here's a link to the discussion where I talk about his musical work that involves the Bose L1 systems.

Pat Metheny Project Description

I greatly look forward to your comments and questions.

Wow! What a way to use the L1!

I'm most interested in how he's pairing a Compact with a Model II in several locations. Are there different signals going to each of these?

Also he's even using different heights on the Compacts in some places. It looks like he's either doing this for placement with instruments that are closer to the ground or to preserve sightlines.

Fascinating!

Tell us more, Ken!
Hi Tom,

I'm hoping to have better technical details based on the discussion here and on what folks want to know.

For now, he uses Model II systems for his guitar sounds (lots of them) and for some of the instruments (piano, bass). The L1 Compacts are used to pick up and amplify some of the instruments that aren't loud enough acoustically by themselves (the bottle organs on each side of the stage for example).

The different heights for the Compacts are I think for visual design reasons.

Hi Sundog,

He uses a monitor (or maybe two) for his voice: he talks a bit about the project during the show, which is fascinating.

And some of the boxes you see are pieces of his electric guitar rig. For some shows, he used only L1 Model II for electric guitar and for some he used a hybrid of some of his boxes (what you see) and the Model IIs.

For all shows, the L1 systems are used exclusively for all the acoustic guitars.

The system is very, very complicated and I don't pretend to understand everything. I think Pat and David Oakes are the only ones who really do. It's like a brain.

The timing couldn't have been better! The thread starts, I point it out to musician friend, one of whom informs me this morning he is going to see that specific show in 5 weeks' time...

I now have in my pocket two tickets for Pat Metheny's Orchestrion project on October 12th in Montréal!

I had inferred form the posts that the tour had ended, but it's going on strong in October in the northeast. Oct10 tour dates.

Keep on strumming,

A very happy JFd

Wow! Have been using an L1 Mod 2 since 2008 and wasn't aware of this project. Friend with a Compact brought it to my attention, and I still have some questions. Are the L1s and Compacts tied into the huge mixing board we see, and if so, how? I'm using a T1 with the L1, but as of recent have added a Zoom Livetrak 12 into the mix, run l/r main out to T1 ch 4/5. Just occurred to me that there is a possibility of adding one or more L1s since in addition to the main outs, have monitor l/r, and five head phone monitor outs on the Livetrak 12. I see this is an old thread, but if anyone still monitoring would appreciate any thoughts on running multiple L1s.

Watching this video, it sounds like all the L1 systems are run through the main board.

and if so, how?

We can't see any detail of the board in the background, but it's possible has  a 16-bus (or more) architecture. That could be enough to handle the 12 L1 sytems with outputs to a Front of House system too.

Sure, there are lots of possibilities. How many separate loudspeakers (L1 systems and/or F1 or S1 Pro systems) do you need to connect?

Thanks for the quick response! In my case it would just be another L1 or possibly my friends compact. Not really wanting to buy another T1 or T4, but I guess one of the channels of 4/5 could go to another L1 or the Compact? Thanks again and best regards,

Walt B
