well, I am currently using a 3ft cable 1/4 from my DJ controller, thinking I was getting a balanced connection.

I suspect there not to be an issue by NOT using a balanced 3ft connection (I used to use the XLR connection).  Since then, I have not noticed anything yet such as hum or interference.

Should I change my setup and find a way to make the DJ controller connection balanced by either using a XLR connection or using the balanced 4/5 and putting the current 4/5 on channel 3 since it is not balanced anyhow?

There's no reason to change anything if everything works and sounds okay.

Sure; swap the cables around.  Do you hear a difference? There might be a difference in volume but you can compensate for that with the trim controls.
