I think I saw that the speakers in the tower were changes to have somewhat staggered positions.  My Compact is like that.  The Classic's speakers appear to be straight.  What is the effect of the two different designs?

Hi Joel,

Thanks for the interesting question.

This is the Articulated Array.

Here's a link to more information about the

Articulated Array®

Does that help?

Oh yes.  Considerable.  But, and this is a big "but," the Compact is up on a stage about 3 feet off the floor in a restaurant.  That means that the array is way above people's heads.  I read a lot about the array back in 2006 when I bought the Classic, but not when I bought the Compact.  I probably should have removed one of the extensions on the Compact, putting the array only slightly above heads.

What prompted the question was that I was told the volume was too loud from the Classic (never got that complaint with the Compact), but from where I was sitting (about 45 degrees off center, and 7-8 feet away), it seemed fine.  I walked out into the dining room and it was indeed much louder than from where I was sitting.

So I wondered if the articulated array was addressed to this.

Last big "but" is that my Classic had been down years beccause Bose wasn't repairing them.  I found someone on Ebay to fix it, so this "assessment" is all based on one gig

Hi Joel,

The L1 Classic is a little louder directly on-axis (directly in front of it), than off to the sides.

And yes, with the Compact elevated three feet, you had a lot of sound going up and possibly over the audience.  It would not deliver as much sound to the listeners.
