Discussions about the new Bose S1 Pro

Bose S1 Pro

Designed for musicians, DJs and general PA use, the S1 Pro is the ultimate all-in-one PA, floor monitor and practice amplifier that's ready to be your go-anywhere Bluetooth music system for nearly any occasion.

This is the place to discuss the S1 Pro system.

Bose Connect App version 6.1.0 is available now for the S1 Pro system (May 31, 2018)

Hi Oldghm

The latest firmware adds Bluetooth functionality so it will work with Bose Connect.

Within Bose Connect you can control the volume, change the Bluetooth name, use party-mode (two Bose devices at the same time), and stereo mode.

You don't need two S1 Pro systems for party-mode or stereo. As I'm writing this post, I'm listening to music in stereo from my Android tablet. I am using an S1 Pro on one side and a Bose SoundLink Revolve on the other.

Bose recommends that you update your S1 Pro to the latest firmware so you have the latest features. Also - in future, you can receive and install updates using Bose Connect, without a wired connection. Although I should add that wired updates are faster.

Please update the firmware in your S1 Pro.

Visit Bose system update center

Scroll down and click the image of the S1 Pro.

Follow the prompts.

A few minutes later, your S1 Pro will be up to date with the latest firmware.

Does that help?

ST

Thanks ST,

I had already updated before this post. It went very smooth. I updated the S1 with my desktop, and got the app on my ipad.

No apparent problems and I'm glad because I barely know the difference between updating firmware and downloading an app.

Might come in handy in the future.

O..

Hi ST, When I go to the Bose Updater site on my desktop, it just keeps recycling the Bose Logo and shows a blue line that says connecting. I get the same results whether the S1 is connected, or not. If I visit the Updater with my iPhone, or iPad I get a similar screen to what you've shown. but there is no icon for the S1 Pro, just the Bose Compact picture with Specialty/Prof & Other underneath.

I've had no trouble downloading the Connect 6.1.0 App to both of my devices,. but am stymied by the Updater site. What am I doing wrong?

Kirk

Hi Kirk,

You're not doing anything wrong.

The Bose Updater (http://btu.bose.com) supports Windows and macOS only. If you browse to it on other devices, you are redirected to Bose Support (that doesn't have the updater).

You have to use your desktop computer to get the firmware update.

Please disconnect the S1 Pro from your desktop computer.

It sounds like you have some bad data in your browser cache on your desktop machine.

Next time you go back to the  Bose Updater

  • Use a different browser
    OR
  • Open a new private window in the browser you are using now
    OR
  • Clear the cache in the browser before you try again
    OR
  • Use a different Windows or macOS computer

When you see

then it's okay to connect your S1 Pro to the computer using the USB cable.

Were you able to update your firmware?

Here are some notes for people new to these ideas.  When talking about Bose products:

Firmware

This is software in the physical device (e.g. S1 Pro, ToneMatch Mixer, L1® Power Stand).

For the S1 Pro system firmware updates can be downloaded and installed using a Windows or macOS computer from the Bose Updater

For ToneMatch Mixers and L1® products firmware updates can be downloaded and installed using a Windows or macOS computer from this Downloads site.

App

For the S1 Pro system this is software that runs on an IOS or Android device (e.g. phone or tablet) - The Bose Connect App

Download and install Bose Connect App

  • Unlock the full potential of your product.
  • Free app compatible with most Apple and Android™ systems
  • Easily connect your S1 Pro with your mobile device
  • Keep your S1 Pro up-to-date with the latest software
  • Use two S1 Pros in party mode or stereo

Kirk;

I had a similar problem with the S1 Pro update on my computer.  There are apparently 2 flavors of mini-usb to USB cable - one a "charge cable" and another a full data path cable.  The first time I tried updating the firmware I grabbed an unlabeled "charger cable" that had the correct connectors but didn't have all of the pathways connected.

The Bose updater just spun in place and said it couldn't find the device (S1 Pro).

I got another cable that I was SURE was a data cable and was able to connect and install S1 firmware with the scary results I've already posted about...but finally worked...

The download of Bose Connect 6.1 is what's failed a half dozen times.  I've given up for now and will wait a few days to see if Google Play updates sufficiently to allow me to download the correct version into my phone.

HINT TO BOSE!  Update the description to correctly describe and/or give Google Play a kick in the pants so that we can reliably download version 6.1 please!

Hi again ST,

No luck. I’ve cleared the cache, tried a different browser and went to stealth mode and still nothing. I guess the question I have is: Why is this so difficult to access? I’ve updated firmware on a number of different devices and never had this problem. I don’t have another computer that I have ready access to, so I’m spinning my wheels here. Note: my S1 Pro is not connected, I'm just trying to access the site

Kirk

Hi Kirk,

Hey, I'm sorry this isn't working for you. This new to me too.

Please try this.

If you're running Windows, remove the Bose Updater program.

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click System on the Settings menu.
  4. Select Apps & features from the left pane. ...
  5. Select Bose Updater.
  6. Click the Uninstall button that appears.

If you're on a Mac please see: macOS Install, Update, Remove programs

After you have removed the Bose Updater app, go to http://btu.bose.com

This time it may take awhile to load and you may have to give it permission to download and install the latest version of the Bose Updater program.

If that succeeds, then you should be able to connect your USB cable to the S1 Pro system.

Please let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

ST

That might be it. My laptop and PC are Windows 10. I shopped Fry's daily coupon code sales and picked up an HP Windows 10 netbook for $99 and a Lenovo PC for $89. I held out, until I had to retire the Windows 7 PC, as websites and software quit working with it. I also picked up a LaCie solid state hard drive that works with USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 for $59.

Got the updated installed, they pair perfectly.

Is there a way to pair the devices on a smartphone, then switch to another device OR make the speakers remember the pairing?

If I want to stream from the BT from my computer, I should be able to use the smartphone to get it connected then switch to the other device and retain the stereo wireless pairing

The S1 Pro systems can only stream music in dual mono or stereo from the device running the Bose Connect app.

You can't switch to a different Bluetooth source and maintain the connection for dual mono or stereo.

The connection requires the Bose Connect app.

I'm thinking this answer is "no", but I'm gonna ask it anyway...  When using the regular two channels for guitar and vocals (not channel 3), is there a way to daisy-chain two S1s wirelessly by using the Bose Connect app?  It'd be nice to get rid of the cord that need to run between the two,

Hi Archtop Eddy,

Great question. As you thought, the answer is "no".

The Bose Connect app allows you to stream audio over Bluetooth from the device running the app (tablet, phone) to one or two S1 Pro systems. You can't send audio from one S1 Pro to another.

Then the only way I know how to stream from a laptop wirelessly is to get a BT transmitter that broadcasts to two speakers simultaneously then pair both speakers to the transmitter.

Laptop --> Dual BT transmitter --> Bose S1 + Bose S1

What BT version does the Bose support?  4.0, 4.1, or 4.2?  Does it support APTX?

DRAT!  Curses -- foiled again!

Actually, thanks ST for the quick response.

Before the Bose connect update I was able to Bluetooth from my MacBook in mono to two s1s but there was a noticeable echo and it’d get worse over time. Props to the developers/engineers/programmers who make these connections  possible and stable ✊🏽

Thanks, but the problem is not the USB cable, or port. I can't connect to the Bose Update site on my PC with Win 7

I just checked with Bose Support. The person with whom I spoke was running Windows 7 and he was able to use the Bose Updater while we were on the phone.

He suggested that you try the Google Chrome browser.

If that doesn't work, please call Bose Support and they can walk through the process with you.

Not totally on topic, but is there a link to a Bose site that lists what features were added to a given firmware version for the S1

It works.

It will be nice to play between the sets music in stereo...

I won't even ask how to switch which Pro is on which side of the stereo field...  It appears that the first one connected is going to be "left"?

The first S1 Pro system you connect to your device will be LEFT when you switch to Stereo mode.

Hi Everyone,

NOTE: Please ensure that your S1 Pro System is fully charged and connected to AC power when you do the firmware update.

If the battery is low (even if plugged into AC power) the firmware will not be applied.
