Help! Advice needed on gear needed for DJ starting out

Stevie C ·
Hi Guys! My name is Steve and I'm based in Australia where I'm an acoustic singer songwriter entertainer for 6 months of the year in the outback Kimberley region in Western Australia. After years of singing and playing guitar with my Bose L1 Model 2, I'm looking to mix things up a bit (and give my throat a rest) by doing a DJ gig once a week - replacing one of my singing gigs and doing the occasional wedding. I have researched these forums extensively and have become a bit lost with all the...

L1 Compact, L1 Model II, F1 system which is better?

jdbassentertainment.com ·
Hi everyone I have been spending most of my time on the F1 forum... This being said I still am the proud owner of four L1 systems - two Model II and two Compacts. A colleague of my wanted to know which was better the L1 or F1 systems... where I replied neither! I told him they are unique tools and all the models in the Bose portable PA speakers have there place... I then replied... I use the Compacts for outdoor ceremony's and small shows where I don't anticipate dancing. I use my L1 Mod. II...

Hi JD, We've got different applications, but that's part of the fun of having an open conversation. Model II As a performer, solo or in a band - for me - nothing beats performing in front of a Model II with a T1® on my microphone stand. I have absolute confidence in what I'm hearing and sharing with an audience and my band mates. I sing and play electric guitar (most of the time). I play acoustic but less often. For most of what I do with a Model II, a B1 is the best choice for me. If I'm...

I am Thankful!

Hi everyone, it is that time of year when we can reflect on the year... and offer thanks. I am thankful for the Bose F1 components that have integrated so well in my DJ and Live Sound business. These light weight, powerful and amazing sounding speakers/subs were the tools I was lacking but needed for quite some time... very very happy with my investment! Thank you Bose for another year with great gear!! -JD Bass

Big day out for my F1 and L1 systems!

Each year for the last few years I've provided front-of-house sound, DJ and MC services to a vineyard for a popular food, wine and music festival. This year I had a great time and my sound system worked a treat. Here's what the set up looked like. Here’s the equipment list: 2 x Bose F1 Model 812 Flexible Array Loudspeakers (Front of House) 2 x Bose F1 Subwoofers (Front of House) 2 x Bose L1 Compacts (fold-back monitors on the stage) 1 x Bose L1 Model 2 Loudspeaker with B2 Bass Module for...

That's probably accurate, plus at least the same again outside the marquee, right in close, and the rest enjoying the music from other areas nearby. The sound travelled brilliantly.

L1 System for DJs & crowd size. What do you use?

jdbassentertainment.com ·
Hey everyone, I wanted to share my results with my fellow DJs having to do with L1 Systems and crowd size. As time goes on I am gaining more and more respect for the L1 Systems. The little things never cease to amaze me! I have been using the L1 systems now for over 9 years now. Buying the L1 Systems was the best equipment purchase choice I ever made! The quality of sound and portability are truly worth every penny!! I have recently (about 6 months ago) purchased the F1 Systems and although...

That is a good question, I have never used them like this... I always use at least one sub... It depends on the type of venue and what type of music is playing through them/band or DJ and lastly what type of crowd will be there ?... quiet listening/party it up? DJ - Background Music/PA - I'd estimate 250-350 people DJ - Party - I'd estimate up to 250 people Small Band - Background Music/PA - 250-350 people Small Band - Party it Up - I'd estimate up to - 200 people Large Band - Background...

Mounting ToneMatch in a console?

Has anyone mounted their ToneMatch into a console? I'm thinking about switching from the mixer I'm using to the ToneMatch, as 90% of the work I'm doing is with either an L1 M1S or L1 M2, and I'll need to build a new custom DJ console. Pictures if you've got 'em would be awesome please. I picture something like the console I used back in 2005, but with the T1 in place of the mixer in the photo.

Re: Mounting ToneMatch in a console?

Apollo, you misunderstood my question I think. I'm not using that console, I'm looking at making a new one with the ToneMatch INSTEAD of the mixer, and I was wondering if anyone had already done this.

Just a thought, I would too like a rack mountable T1 in either an 8 or 12 XLR input arrangement. Cheers, James

Hi JD, This is a fun topic. Live Musician - Applications Front of House (FOH) I use two F1 Stacks (F1 Model 812 with F1 Subwoofer) on either side and front of the stage. I use a Soundcraft Ui16 as the mixer. Typically, I will have L1® Compacts or L1® Model II units at the back of the stage for monitors. In this situation, I am also performing. Backline Amp I use this with my T1®, Neumann KMS 105 , and Kemper Profiling Amp. I would normally use my L1® Compact for this application. The...

No B2?

bmoney ·
Hello, I regularly perform DJ sets for a department store, and I'm always getting complaints about the bass with my L1 Model II. This despite having the module on the lowest bass setting. So I was wondering if it would be worth just running the L1 without the B2? I realize it's going to alter the overall sound quality significantly, but in the setting I play, that's really an afterthought. Any advice?

Re: No B2?

Hi bmoney, I had another thought about your problem. Are you set up beside a wall or in a corner? You may have heard that you can augment the bass by putting a B2 against a wall or in a corner. The opposite is also true. If you can get the B2 in the range from 2-7 feet from a wall, the reflection from the wall tends to reduce some of the bass frequency range in the audience (an interference effect). Even if you are not right next to a wall or in a corner, try moving the B2 a few feet in any...

Hi bmoney, Thank you for joining the Community. Wow! You got some great suggestions and advice from RF-Musiker/ Musician! One tiny point. You can run your L1® Model II without a bass module, but you don't want to. Your L1® wasn't designed to run without a bass module: It sounds terrible, but you won't damage the L1®. You will likely do irreparable harm to your reputation. What is your sound source? Do you have any way of dialing down the bass in that device? ST

Hi ST, Thanks so much for the info! Logistically, lugging around the B2 for this particular venue is always kind of a nightmare. That was also playing into my original logic. I use a Pioneer DDJ SX2 controller for my source. I can definitely reduce the bass on that.

L1 doesn't work without B2 or B1. When people complain about bass and/or volume level, there are many possible reasons. One of them could be, they simply dislike the music. If this would be, nothing helps, to fix it, than to change the music. But when I assume, that the kind of music is ok, I would use an equalizer. Sometimes the room has resonances, boosts about 100 Hz or absorbs mids or, or... The best would be, when you have opportunity, doing the sound check without customer. Play the...
