How do I set up my microphone with the T1 ToneMatch® audio engine

ST
Here's a quick video to help you to set the input trim for a microphone on the T1®. This is called Gain Staging. The same principles apply for an instrument or line level input. Set the source to the highest level that you will need during the show, and then set the input trim so that you get solid green, occasional yellow flickers, and never see red. ... more T1® Videos ... more information about the T1 ToneMatch® Audio Engine STRead More...

Set up the T1 for stereo

Hello everyone, This is a guide on how to set up a T1 feeding two separate sources for left and right, e.g. two model II's or model I's. T1 is designed to be a mono device, so the setup for stereo is a little complicated. But, once set up, you can easily control volume of the stereo feed from your stereo device (keyboard, DJ mixer, iPod, etc.). Please note - you will not be able to use reverb in this configuration. Most keyboards already have stereo reverb built in - you can use that reverb...Read More...

Room Acoustics for Performers: Introduction

Ken-at-Bose
Hi Folks, At the recent L1 conference in Little Switzerland I gave a talk on Room Acoustics for Performers. We videotaped the presentation and we'll make that available as soon as it's been edited. I plan to add to the material in that talk here, and eventually I'm hoping we can move the information to the L1 wiki. I encourage you to ask questions and add your own commentary to these threads. The material gets better and better when you do. My goal is to provide information about room...Read More...
For bass traps you need much denser material (e.g. the densest building insulation sheet), ideally suspended a few inches away from the wall, and preferably positioned in corners.Read More...

L1 classic half work

Hi to you all, I am Fabrizio from Italy. I have a couple of used (not by me) L1's classic with 4x B1. One is perfect, the other nope. I run them always with a line input in the input 3 (at volume 3) and already tried the input 4. The broken system sound awful, No eq and NO x-over. I have full range in the sub output, Removed the radiator and checked the 3 amps individually. All works correctly if driven from their inputs. If I use one of the classic line inputs (3 and 4) in every amps out I...Read More...

IEM - In Ear Monitoring

Hi all, Thought it might be interesting to hear about other peoples experience, suggestions, recommendations on the subject of IEM's. I guess we're all aware of the benefits of IEM, they can protect your hearing from damage from high level sounds, and they can feed you with exactly the mix you want and or need to hear while performing. It can also fix the problem of the Doppler effect (this is where reflected sound can reach the ears of the vocalist slightly off pitch and cause them to sing...Read More...

L1 Model 2 vs F1 Model 812 with F1 sub

I am very new to this field. Bought L1 model II with B2 as one of my friend recommended this. I have seen F1 Model 812 with F1 sub seems like covering bigger crowd and also higher watts based on the overview of the product. Any reason why one would prefer L1 model 2 over F1 model 812 with F1. I ask because i am planning to return L1 M2 and get F1 Model 812.. Any info which will help to make my mind would be helpful. Thx SriRead More...
With what you describe, I'd start with purchasing another L1M2 with B2. If necessary for the biggest outdoor gigs, you can add a couple more B2s if you're not getting enough "thump" but I don't think you would need them. I had an L1M2 with 2 B1s and an F1. On my LAST major sound gig I had the L1M2 well behind the stage and the F1 on the floor in front in an ampitheater seating situation -- audience above F1 and it worked OK because the L1 carried the higher frequencies while the F1 provided...Read More...

S/H L1 Model 1 v S/H Bose F1

Hey! As a follow up from my recent problems with my L1 Model 1 (thanks to ST for pointing in the right direction for a fix) I'm looking at sourcing a second unit to re-enforce my sound and as a backup. Here in the UK s/h values (all I can afford for now) between a L1 Model 1 and F1 is not that great - £800 v £1000 roughly. I'm a solo performer using loops and home made backings but heavy type stuff rock & punk etc. I'd sometimes like to push the volume more or at least have that option.Read More...

Behringer Xenyx 802 mixer to L1 Compact

I have a Behringer Xenyx 802 mixer and I want to connect it to my L1 Compact to run external effects for a single mike and my guitar (solo acoustic). I've read in this forum that, after connecting your mike, guitar and effects to the mixer, you simply run a cable with a 1/4" jack from the Left Main Output on the mixer to the 1/4" jack input on Channel 2 on the L1 (with the switch set to the Line Level position and all pan controls on the mixer turned to the left). Can you confirm this the...Read More...
Hi Baja Beat, Thanks for mentioning this. Yes, you can leave the pan controls up the middle and things will work. On most mixers, you will get up to +3 dB more gain from each channel if you pan them hard to one side (e.g., left) and use the left output. Panning up the middle won't work if you have stereo inputs that have dedicated left and right inputs. You will lose the right channel. STRead More...

LI II Subwoofer / Base Unit

I was disconnecting my system but the plug into my base unit from my subwoofer jammed. I pulled the clip back but it wouldn't release. I yanked on it and it came out but a connector broke in the base unit. I popped the broken piece out of the base unit. The connector was broken but I had another cable so I wasn't worried. However when I set up the next night, my subwoofer is no longer working. I'm afraid I'll have to buy another base unit. Can anyone give me any advice? Thank you.Read More...

T4S Stereo mixer into Mono L1

The T4s is labelled as a Stereo Mixer with built in FX. Typically FX such as Delay is mono input and stereo output, this of course gives much greater width to the effect making it sound much more natural by bouncing it left and right across the stereo output.... But what if... What if you have a T4s and ONE L1 II - B2? This obviously can only be mono. So what happens when you connect your T4s digital output 'left' to the L1 II... Took me a while to work out why the mono output from the L1...Read More...
Hi Dave, For larger mixers, we frequently use the shorthand tracks/busses terminology. It's a great way to convey some information concisely. In the world of compact ?/2 mixers (two output busses), the outputs are almost always referred to as Left and Right, and even on larger systems, pan controls are usually labeled Left and Right. When we talk about assigning tracks to busses, then yes, we get back to identifying things by number. Most of the ?/2 mixers I've seen do not explicitly...Read More...

T1 Rotary selector Comp/Gate

Garry
Good afternoon all. A question that is not easy to put logically so I hope you can understand the meaning. If I select Comp/Gate, firstly can you use both the Compressor and the Gate together (This is input for guitar) secondly if I select comp 1 and do not bypass comp 2 and 3 are all 3 compressors working on the signal. Also if I have not bypassed the Limiter / De-esser / Kickgate 1 & 2 are they still acting on the signal? Now if you can only have 1 effect selected at a time then the...Read More...
Garry.... It's what ST said It is not easy to explain logically because the logic is not the kind Earthlings are usually familiar with, its Bose logic! I had similar thoughts as yourself, it looks a bit ambiguous because of the way things are presented on the display and the way the user input controls behave. I've no idea why Bose or any other company's see fit to try and reinvent the wheel, especially when the wheel they invent is somehow worse that a big lump of rock with the corners worn...Read More...

Good idea ST. Now you've got my designer head on! Look out on Ebay for the new "DUAI box" (Dave's Ultimate Audio Interface). In the mean time while everyone is waiting for that... This is probably ultimately the best, easiest, most convenient and simplest solution for possibly all scenarios. The biggest drawback will be the cost! A wireless IEM system. Bose L1 Model 1 - Orange Power Light

Ugh. Was happily using my treasured L1 yesterday when all of a sudden the sound died. The Power on light now stays orange and the two input channel signal light red, all with everything unplugged. RE: Connecting my L1 compact & Tonematch to an external PA

Hello, I’m a solo female singer & using my L1 compact & tonematch in its simplest form of my iPad connected to channel 4/5 of my tonematch & my radio mic in channel 1. I have gigs where I’m having to use their PA system because I need to use their speakers system because they have them for the back of room. Giselle, Given the option, you'd want them to plug your Bose outputs into a channel (or two, if applicable) that is set for Line Level. If they plug you into a channel set up for a mic input, the Bose's (or any mixer's) line level output will be too strong and overdrive the channel into distortion. Hopefully they will know what you mean...if not, you may have to use the T1's Aux output as ST suggested as an alternative, as you would be able to drop the level of that output down low enough so...Read More...

Presets for Yamaha Guitars

I play a few different guitars, among them a Yamaha APX900.Are there any tone match presets for this instrument.I have gigged with this guitar for about a year using a Fender 100 watt acoustic amp and got a really good sound with it. Opinion on unconventional speaker placement

I understand the first rule of speaker placement is “just try it” but I would like to get some informed opinions on a unique situation I have on an upcoming show. I host a private house concert series. Our room is 13x30x 8, and we seat 40 people. Our sound is provided by a Bose L1 Model II / B2 Bass Module using a Soundcraft UI16 digital mixer. Hi Rob, If this was a bar/restaurant/nightclub I would say, based on personal experience, forget about it. But, it's not. If it is a true listening room, and your audience is respectful and quiet, you can pull this off, at least I think you can. Assuming the band uses the same positioning as shown in the picture, they are used to being in close proximity to one another. I would not ask or expect them to change what they normally do. A big part of live music is the visual. That's why people...Read More...

Using T1 Tonematch to run FoH and monitor

Hi guys I've been through this before and ST did explain it very well once but I have lost all the information, basically I have a gig coming up on the 6th April at a rather large Town Hall with around 180 people, all of whom will be seated for part of the performance and then ready to jive after their meal. Hi Geoff, Terrific! It sounds like you understand the Levels concept. Dry - the only thing you can control is the Level. Next time try Post After Fader If you're happy running through T1 Channel 4/5 - keep doing that. No, the L1 Model II Power Stand Analog Input is balanced mono. It doesn't convert stereo to mono. Truly Acoustic Guitars

I’m thinking seriously about buying a Bose L1Compact, but I have one important question. Whenever possible, I like to perform with truly acoustic guitars (no transducers, pickups, etc). I always like playing in clubs where the sound people know how to find the sweet spot for a microphone in front of a guitar (these folks are generally old enough to be dinosaurs, like me). So . . . Will the Bose L1 function properly with a mic (with a 1/4 inch jack plugged into the instrument channel)? Or...Read More...
Hi ST, Thanks for this information. When it comes to miking an acoustic guitar, I would consider 4 inches close miking, especially when compared to where the best sound is found when recording, which is more likely in the 8 to 12 inch range and not necessarily in front of the sound hole. For live performance use, the best location is in front of the sound hole, the same place where the playing hand is working. The finger stylist fares better than a strummer for working space, but worse when...Read More...

system sounds as if it is compressed

Hi, Just purchased a new L1 model II with double bass bins and T1 last week and have used in for a few gigs since. I have a one man show using backing tracks with live lead guitar and vocals. I seem to find that my mic sounds very compressed (squeezed) through the system as if the system was protecting itself, even though the L1 isnt really that loud. National Resolectric Guitar through L1 Model II with B1

I am 1/2 of an acoustic duo. We use the Bose system for two vocal lines and 2 instruments line. Our Martin Acoustic guitars w/ built in preamp work great with the system. Plenty of volume and overall great sound. We also use a Uke thru a Radial pz-pre acoustic preamp to give the Uke a boost into the ToneMatch. This too delivers the amplified results we want.
