Paul Schaefer's L1 Set Up

Today I had the privilege of visiting the David Letterman set and learning more about how Paul Schaefer is using the L1 Classic that you have seen beside him for years. The system is fed by a sub-mix of all of Paul’s keys and synths enabling him to hear himself clearly on stage. The band also has an in-ear monitor mix which enables them to talk among themselves and listen to songs as David Letterman is interviewing guests. There is also a printer attached to the laptop so they can print...Read More...

Creative L1 Compact Uses

Ok so it has been over a year since the release of the L1® Compact system and we continue to hear stories about the product being used from everything from military services to fitness classes. I thought it would be a good idea to create an area to capture some of the more unique uses for the system aside from musical performances. So tell us; what types of creative uses have you found for the L1® Compact system? NeilRead More...
How about this for a creative use. Some have been known to call it a hat stand so .... (I know it's not a Compact but it seemed a bit silly to create a new thread just for this and the Modell II just happened to be set up) .... Maybe it will make someone smile in times where many feel that they have to go down into the basement to laugh. It reminds me a bit of ST's Avatar before the F1 joined the ranks. In case anyone's interested, the guitar is a Taylor T5 Standard in a black gloss finish. TonyRead More...

L1 Benefits Statement

Ken-at-Bose
Hello Everyone, We wrote this before we introduced our new approach to live music amplification. These words appear on many of the cartons in the L1 family of products. We thought it would be good to repeat these words here.Read More...
This is an example of some of the old "Gems" which are turning up since the introduction of the new forum software. The words are as true now as they were then. Here's an example. My wife had a birthday party in January and I set up the Compact+T1 so that I could play easily for our guests and be heard anywhere in our living room which is L-shaped and about 50m2. Due to illnesses and bad weather forecast (snow) the party wasn't too big an affair and I could have played without amplification.Read More...

L1® Compact - what do I need to add more sound (louder)

Hi, I am very new to all this and this forum, it fact I only doing this on my daughters behalf. She has just started gigging and she's has the following setup , Shure SM58 mic , T1 tone match and two l1 compacts and an ipad for backing tracks. We are really delighted with the L1 compacts and we are still working out the T1 settings but are a bit concerned that they will not be loud enough for larger gigs. We have had no complaints at the moment with social club gigs around 100 people...Read More...
Hi Craig, That's what I do. You can use the T1® with both. Oh, and remember that balanced cable you ordered? You should be using that for the connection from the T1® to the L1® Compact anyway. There's a ToneMatch cable that came in the bottom of the box with the T1®. You will use that to connect to the L1® Model II. STRead More...

anyone using f1 tops and subs with L1M2

Just wondering if anyone is mixing the L1 system with the F1 system. example: L1M2 with F1 Top and SubRead More...
HI I had used the setup with Two L1M2s and two F1+Subs. I found that eventhough L1 is theoretically 500W and F1 is 1000W, L1M2 performs much better than the F1s. F1s are more crisper, but L1s are not bad too... SO I preferred to use all L1s .. But I am playing around to see to get more suble base if i hook up just the F1subs along with the L1s.. Wil try it in my next gig. Thanks Siji AnandRead More...

Why no XLR input on the L1 MII power base?

I'm curious why Bose chose to use a 1/4" jack for the input as opposed to an XLR or combo jack. Anyone know?Read More...
I figured it was something like that! I use my MIIs in a variety of configurations but the input is always from a mixer. If the gig requires low to moderate volume I put them behind the band but for highrt volume situations I place them in front of the band like a traditional FOH setup. They ALWAYS sound great!Read More...

Hi Yamahaha, When the L1 was first conceived, it was engineered to be the end of the signal chain. With the (extremely) wide horizontal dispersion, they did not expect anyone to run dual mono. In fact, they discouraged it. You can read about that in the article below. Dual Mono STRead More...

The original virgin!

Hi All. First post - introduction. I am a geriatric (never been a ) roadie for my 17 year old grand daughter - who sings like an angel with a very smokey voice! I've struggled to date with some big, heavy Mackie Thump speakers & mixer with varying results. Feedback has been a big problem in small places. SO I dug deep and she now has a shiny new L1 Compact. Our first outing with the new gear will be on the 10th March at a bijou little wine bar where I am looking for a stela success!!Read More...
Hi ST. I hadn't planned on a dry run but I did go there and hear a guitar/singer duo a few weeks ago. They were using an L1 and it was fabulous. I chatted to them about the gear and they were delighted with it - not just for its ease of transport/set up but the noise it made for them. It allowed them to work without a monitor in bigger places too. It was seeing & hearing them that pushed me into impoverishing myself to buy one for Izzy!! Hopefully hers will work exactly as the one we saw...Read More...

Which L1 product to choose???

We have a room that measures about 10m long by 5m wide. We'll have a keyboard, guitar and 1-2 mikes for singers, with at times about 40-50 people singing along as well ... Help: L1 Model II died on a gig

My L1 II just died at a gig last weekend. Plugged into surge protectors, in a hall I've played before, it just ... stopped. Lights were still on, on the Tonematch and the base; the Tonematch was still getting signal, just no sound coming out of the speakers at all. I swapped out the tonematch cable, but it made no difference. I swapped out the speaker columns, but it made no difference. I have 2 of these PAs, so I eventually just swapped out to the other one and finished the gig. But now I...Read More...
Hi, devnulljp, Thanks for all the followup information. It's great to hear that your L1® Model II power stand is working. Very low, out-of spec, AC power (less than ~105 VAC on a 120V system, or less than around ~215 V on a 230 V system. The manual states 110 and 220 for good measure) coupled with high signal level. This can be caused by a low power source, or one where the outlets are a very long distance from the electrical panel, extra equipment on the same electrical branch, power sags...Read More...

4 piece rock band trying to figure out what to buy

We are a newly formed, all female, 4 piece rock band that needs to start buying PA equipment. We have drums, bass, lead guitar, and we alternate between keys and rhythm guitar. We also have 3 vocal mics. We currently use amps for bass and guitars, and run our vocals and keyboard through an inadequate L1 compact for practice as our gigs aren't until summer. We want a PA system that will work for small outdoor events with less than 100 people. Could one L1 Model II system with B2 bass work for...Read More...

Connecting an L1 Classic with an L1 Compact with a single T1 for MONO

Hello, I'm new here as of today. I am trying to get my girlfriend's band practice space set up, and they have the equipment listed: 1 - L1 Classic, 1 - L1 Compact, and 1 - T1 ToneMatch. They would like to have the T1 connected directly to the L1 Classic, then the L1 Classic output to the L1 Compact so the same sounds are heard coming from both units. I found a diagram showing essentially what we are trying to do, I am just wondering if the blue line indicating "your input" can be the T1...Read More...
I hope that the 1st practice went OK and that you all had a lot of fun yesterday. What we've not mentioned up to now (but maybe that's not necessary) is that the Bose Microphone Presets are EQ'd for what we call "Close Miking" which means that the lips are very close to (or even brushing) the mesh of the microphone. In this position most microphones display what it called the "proximity effect" an emphasizes the lower frequencies. I'm telling you this for 2 reasons. 1) If a vocalist has the...Read More...

Instrument channel has little to no volume

We have been using the L1 compact system for a year or so with great results. We are a three piece, two guitars and a piano. We have been running vocals panned hard right from the mixer into the microphone channel and the instruments panned hard left into the instrument channel. I have recently noticed that to achieve a nice balance the instrument channel has to be 25% hotter than the vocal/mic channel. Today the instrument channel went out almost completely. It still has sound but it is...Read More...
Ok, I contacted Bose support with no joy. Was told to try and clean to trim pot. As of now I get only distorted scratchy sound from the ‘instrument’ channel unless I press and hold pressure on the trim pot itself. Otherwise no sound from that channel unless it’s cranked to ‘ten’ and then it’s too loud to use. Question, can any one tell me how to access the inside of the bass unit to gain access to the trim pot? And has anyone else had the same problem and found a fix? I have had this L1...Read More...

Recording to PC from Tonematch lacking reverb

Good afternoon / morning all. Full list of kit is a Bose L1 Model II with B2 bass unit and T1 Tonematch. Microphone 1 through a TC Helicon play electric into input 1 on Tonematch is a Shure GLXD4 digital radio microphone system. Microphone 2 (mine) is a Line 6 Digital radio microphone system direct into input 2 on the Tonematch, my guitar also through the TC Helicon into input 3 on the Tonematch, a media player for backing tracks into input 4 via 2 balanced jack plugs on the Tonematch. I use...Read More...
Thank you for clarifying ST. The confusion arouse because the book on page 26 does imply Pre with EQ and FX which to me says effects meaning reverb / tremolo / chorus etc but apparently not. Any way not a major issue! Cannot add reverb in Sony as that would add reverb to backing track as well. Thank you for your very prompt reply very much appreciated. Looks like a trip to music shop for a stomp box reverb for vocals. GarryRead More...

S1 Pro System Hi Maxcarella, Thanks for the added information! The B2 changes the overall character of the low end. I think that's the biggest difference between what you hear now and what you remember with your first L1 Model II. It is so hard to compare memory of sounds even moments apart. It really depends on the live music (what kind) and the places where you perform (how big, how many people, what are they doing while you play)? Need Help Choosing the System That's Right for Me

Hi Everyone, I've finally made the decision to sell all my old gear and get a Bose L1. Here's what I need it for: I'm a children's performer and I'll be performing in various locations, but primarily school gyms. I perform mainly as a solo act and here's what I need to run through the system: -Acoustic guitar (w/ pickup) -Shure Headworn Mic -Digital Piano -MP3 player or laptop for backing tracks (These are literally mixes of my songs with the lead vocals taken out. There will be lots of...Read More...
Hi Rylan, Thanks for the added information. You'll need an L1® Model II with a B2 Bass Module and a ToneMatch mixer for these settings. The L1® Model II has a horizontal dispersion of about 180 degrees, and vertical is limited to the area in front of the 8 foot Cylindrical Radiator® (very little horizontal dispersion). That latter is great for taming reverberation in large rooms. You can replace everything with the L1 system I mentioned above. You'll want a guitar amp modeller to replace the...Read More...

L1 Model 2 fault red LED, cuts out for a sec

Hi, new to forums. I have an L1 Model 2 with Tonematch bought about 4-5 years ago. Light use in home setting. L1 is turning off, coming back on. Red LED light, fan tries to turn on then off and goes back to Blue LED in a matter of a second or two. I troubleshot the B1 cable, took off speaker array, unplugged all cables but power. T1 settings - Feedback problem

I've just got a new L1 1S with B2 and T1, and my main application is karaoke. My problem is I have pretty loud feedback occasionally when I move around (not the high pitch, but low frequency bassy/humming feedback). The setup is in my home, the room is about 20x25 feet. I've followed several videos to setup the connections, the trim, and the volumes, so I don't think there's any problems in these areas. The current settings I have are: Channel1 (Mic): - ToneMatch: Vocal Mics Shure SM58 -...Read More...
Would like to provide some update. Setting the zEQ to 0db, and moving the B2 around didn't seem to do much. I did these 2 things, and they seem to help quite a bit: (1) Reduce the gain on my Shure SM58 mic by -10db; (2) Set the B2 to Low (instead of Normal). This means I'm losing some power from the mic, and some bass, but they help with the feedback problem. Thanks.Read More...

Tonematch settings for vocal and guitar

Greetings, just purchased an L1/1S with Tonematch. Male vocalist/guitarist, covering singer/songwriter and classic rock, small to medium sized venues. I play a Taylor 714ce (with ES1) and AKG D5 mic. I'm using the Taylor preset (Grand Audit. strum) and the Audix VX5 (there's no D5 preset). I'm hoping someone can offer some advice regarding Tonematch settings, specifically EQ and effects. I like to use a little delay and/or reverb but don't want the "tinny" sound. Thanks much!Read More...
