Paul Schaefer's L1 Set Up

Today I had the privilege of visiting the David Letterman set and learning more about how Paul Schaefer is using the L1 Classic that you have seen beside him for years. The system is fed by a sub-mix of all of Paul’s keys and synths enabling him to hear himself clearly on stage. The band also has an in-ear monitor mix which enables them to talk among themselves and listen to songs as David Letterman is interviewing guests. There is also a printer attached to the laptop so they can print...Read More...

Ok so it has been over a year since the release of the L1® Compact system and we continue to hear stories about the product being used from everything from military services to fitness classes. L1 Benefits Statement

Ken-at-Bose
Hello Everyone, We wrote this before we introduced our new approach to live music amplification. These words appear on many of the cartons in the L1 family of products. We thought it would be good to repeat these words here.Read More...
This is an example of some of the old "Gems" which are turning up since the introduction of the new forum software. The words are as true now as they were then. Here's an example. My wife had a birthday party in January and I set up the Compact+T1 so that I could play easily for our guests and be heard anywhere in our living room which is L-shaped and about 50m2. Due to illnesses and bad weather forecast (snow) the party wasn't too big an affair and I could have played without amplification.Read More...

L1 Model 2 Power Draw?

We sometimes gig in places where power is provided by generators, so I'd like to be able to give a definitive answer regarding the power requirements for my L1 Model II. I know it says 500W, but what does that mean in terms of what I need from a generator or solar battery or whatever? Amps? kWh? I saw a note here (http://toonz.ca/bose/wiki/index.php?title=L1%C2%AE_Compact#AC_Power) about the L1 Compact. What can I tell our hosts about power requirements to run an L1 model II for 3~4 hr ? ThanksRead More...
500w means generator power. Generally there are rated power, commonly used power, maximum power of generator . The maximum power is also called standby power, also known as 1 hour power, that is, if this power is maintained, the continuous operation cannot exceed 1 hour; the rated power refers to 12 hours of power, and the commonly used power means 24 hours of power.Read More...

Any experience using the TC Helicon Play Acoustic with L1B1?

Hello - I am looking into purchasing a TC-Helicon-Play-Acoustic-Effects and would love your input if you've used it with the L1? Yes. I use it with the L1 module 2 setup. It works great. Just take the two outputs from the "Play Acoustic" box and plug the, into two of the inputs of the "ToneMatch." I don't use a mixing board, but I am sure it,s the same.Read More...

Hi shaime, You'll set the trim on the power stand using the trim light. Turn up the trim until you see solid green, with occasional flickers of yellow. This is covered in detail in the article here; Gain Staging It is likely the trim settings for the two models will be similar if you are running the same signal to both. No. If your L1 Model II is working with the B2 (the B2 switch works). Then it is up do date. There have been no firmware updates to the L1 Model 1S. STRead More...

New Bose L1 MkII w/ B2 Bass and T8S Owner

First post! Received my new Bose L1 Mk II w/ B2 bass and T8S tone match mixer yesterday and set it up. Totally stoked! Updated the T8S firmware per excellent instructions found on this site. I’ve been perusing this forum for information and everyone here has provided great knowledge for me, a new Bose owner. I have also just ordered a second L1 Mk II w/ B2 to complete a stereo setup. Thanks ST. Music is classic rock and blues. RED Led

Just got my hands on a L! Mod 2. It turns on, there is sound and power but soon the red LED comes on and the sound disappears. Bose customer service is excellent!

I've owned and used Bose L1s for a few years now and they have been dead reliable. Recently I had the top and bottom plastic caps on one of my top array sections get damaged during load in so I called Bose to order the replacement parts. Much to my surprise (and amazement!) they offered to send me the two parts for free including shipping! I'm not sure what the cost would have been but I imagine the bottom cap is expensive since it has the connector built in. While I was on the phone I...Read More...

Running into limitations with L1 II

Hey all. I've been DJ'ing for a few years now, and I'm reaching some limits. I DJ exclusively pre-recorded music, not live performances. For background I have one T1, two L1 II, and two B2. I notice that I'm having trouble really filling out larger rooms and outdoor spaces. For example, I recently did a middle school dance in a standard size gymnasium, and I was nearly running up the limiter the whole time. It's not just the B2, but also the cylindrical radiators. This year I was able to win...Read More...
Another helpful tip: Location of the sub can also help immensely. Before setting up, place the sub in the middle of the area where you intend people to be dancing. Play a track and walk around where you want to set up and notice where the bass is the strongest. This is where you place the sub. Usually, this is against a wall or in a corner. If you add extra subs, either stack them or place them next to each other.Read More...

Random popping - L1 Model 2 w T4S

Just traded in my original L1 for an L1 Model 2 with T4S mixer. Everything is working correctly and sounding good ... BUT I am getting a random popping with the system sitting idle with one live vocal mic on and one instrument plugged in via direct box, but not making any music ... just sitting there. Backing Tracks from iPad to T1

Hi folks I am wondering if anybody can shed some light on backing tracks for live playing. I use an iPad from which I go out of the headphone socket using a splitter cable, mini stereo jack to left/right mono jacks, and these are going into channel 4/5 of my T1. During most gigs I have to manually adjust the volume of some tracks as some are louder and fuller than others. Of course I appreciate this will be due to the quality of particular tracks, some being better than others, but some seem...Read More...

Electric guitar and T1

Howdy gang I did a fab gig last night with my Model 2 and B2 sub, played to around 140 people and could be heard evenly across the room. Recording live gig with T8S - drums dilemna

I use the T8S and L1M2 for our 5-piece blues band. This past weekend, we played 3 outdoor gigs, and recorded them. We use all 8 channels, with drums coming into channel 8. The drummer uses a kick mic and overhead mic going thru a small personal mixer. He feeds the output of the mixer to the T8S, channel 8. We want to get some decent "demo" recordings of our gigs for our website, etc. This weekend, we used a Zoom audio recorder, and just plugged into the headphone jack, thinking that would be...Read More...
Hi Dave, What you've described is frequently a problem when recording the live mix off the board. You're not getting a recording of what happened in the room. Of course, you're avoiding the problems in the room (noisy environment, nasty acoustics), but your recording includes whatever you did to compensate for the room. For example: If you're on a boomy stage and back off the low-end to compensate in the live mix, the recording is thin. Yes, you can create a separate mix for the Aux Outputs.Read More...

Advice for New Purchase

Hi. I'm looking to upgrade my equipment to a new setup. I mostly setup seminars for clients. Audience size is usually around 100 people. We start with a presenter using an SM58 wireless mic and PowerPoint that often has audio. Afterwards we have a cocktail hour where we play canned music or have a musician or two play. I'm looking for excellent sound quality and something easy to transport. I also want to limit feedback from wandering presenters. The L1 seems perfect for this application. My...Read More...
Hi Stiles, Get a unidirectional headset microphone instead of a lapel or lavalier microphone. Gain-before-feedback is better with a headset microphone because microphone capsule is so much closer to the sound source than with a lapel or lavalier microphone. Also, typical lapel/lavalier microphones are omnidirectional. A unidirectional mic (pointed at the talker's mouth) will give you better gain-before-feedback. No one wants to be the cliche that starts a presentation with feedback or the...Read More...

Indian Classical Music - Live performance

Hi, Recently purchased an L1/Model II with Tonematch T8S. Love it so far but have had a few issues for which I would like the community here to weigh in. In searching this forum, I see a few posts but those are somewhat dated; I did read the part about feedback basics, mic placement/gain structure and such. 1. Placement of speakers: This is the singular reason for my purchase of L1's. I've reviewed many videos/testimonials etc. and from my limited experience now with the L1, I've had trouble...Read More...
I have mixed numerous shows with the exact instrumentation you mentioned, as well as some "hybrid" setups (tabla drums, cajon, djembe, hand percussion, acoustic-electric guitar, electric bass, harmonium, woodwinds, and in one case a traditional drumset.) I placed a single L1 MII tower with two B2s about 4-6 ft behind the band. I have never used a ToneMatch mixer, but generally speaking I would avoid condenser mics in close proximity to the L1 array, especially the C1000. You'll be much...Read More...

L1 x 2 (with a twist) + B2

troubador
At a funeral in a church the other day, I noticed that the sound was very clear, well dispersed and none of the folks at the mics had to raise their voices. I couldn't see speaker systems in the places you'd normally see them (suspended from side walls or ceiling). Eventually I spotted the system ... two L1 towers and a B2. And they carried the sound perfectly (as I would expect them to!). The B2 was placed on the side of the raised 'stage' (for want of a better word) but the L1 towers were...Read More...
