Paul Schaefer's L1 Set Up

Today I had the privilege of visiting the David Letterman set and learning more about how Paul Schaefer is using the L1 Classic that you have seen beside him for years. The system is fed by a sub-mix of all of Paul’s keys and synths enabling him to hear himself clearly on stage. The band also has an in-ear monitor mix which enables them to talk among themselves and listen to songs as David Letterman is interviewing guests. There is also a printer attached to the laptop so they can print...Read More...

Creative L1 Compact Uses

Ok so it has been over a year since the release of the L1® Compact system and we continue to hear stories about the product being used from everything from military services to fitness classes. I thought it would be a good idea to create an area to capture some of the more unique uses for the system aside from musical performances. So tell us; what types of creative uses have you found for the L1® Compact system? NeilRead More...
How about this for a creative use. Some have been known to call it a hat stand so .... (I know it's not a Compact but it seemed a bit silly to create a new thread just for this and the Modell II just happened to be set up) .... Maybe it will make someone smile in times where many feel that they have to go down into the basement to laugh. It reminds me a bit of ST's Avatar before the F1 joined the ranks. In case anyone's interested, the guitar is a Taylor T5 Standard in a black gloss finish. TonyRead More...

L1 Benefits Statement

Ken-at-Bose
Hello Everyone, We wrote this before we introduced our new approach to live music amplification. These words appear on many of the cartons in the L1 family of products. We thought it would be good to repeat these words here.Read More...
This is an example of some of the old "Gems" which are turning up since the introduction of the new forum software. The words are as true now as they were then. Here's an example. My wife had a birthday party in January and I set up the Compact+T1 so that I could play easily for our guests and be heard anywhere in our living room which is L-shaped and about 50m2. Due to illnesses and bad weather forecast (snow) the party wasn't too big an affair and I could have played without amplification.Read More...

hiss on channel 1 with 1/4" to XLR from Alesis Multimix8 hard panned

Hey team, Just got a compact L1. Trouble shooting a hiss I get from my Alesis Multimix 8 to channel 1 of the L1. I'm hard panning vocals from the main out 1/4" from the mixer with a 1/4" to XLR into channel 1 of the L1. The instruments are panned opposite through channel 2 and sound great. 3 acoustic strings & 3 vox. Please advise. ZRead More...
ST, Thanks for the response. Looking at the Alesis Multimix 8 Quick Start Guide I can't tell if the 1/4" outputs are balanced or unbalanced. I haven't been able to find that online. Do you know? I'm not sure if the 1/4" outputs are balanced...yet. If you plug a microphone into L1® Compact Channel 1, to you still get the hiss? No. There is no hiss from a mic directly into L1 compact channel 1. If you reverse the panning on everything (pan the instruments to L1® Compact Channel 1), do you...Read More...

How do I loop vocals using only one Microphone?

I have looped vocals in the past hooking another mic to my rc-30. But I have seen a couple performers loop vocals with there main vocal mic with L1 type 2 and T1 combo. How is this done? And does it cause a problem when I’m setting up a loop with my guitar while I’m singing?Read More...
Hi Edward, Thank you for joining the Community. I'm glad you're here. That's an interesting question and I think it boils down to: I used to have an Boss RC-30 and from what I recall, you cannot isolate the vocal microphone from the guitar or aux inputs when you create a phrase. Looking at the Boss RC-30 manual I couldn't see a way to do that. Maybe the other performers were using a different loop device. Maybe someone more familiar with the RC-30 will join the conversation. K&K Pure Mini with a T1?

Hello everyone! Hoping that someone can help guide me to finding a good setting with my T1 for my Goodall Grand Concert with a K&K pickup. I've gotten "okay" results with the overall "flat" setting, but it's far from sounding really good. If it helps any, my attack is medium-light (in general). I play with a hybrid style, using a flat pick and my remaining fingers (short nails). I play all different styles; some jazz standards, rock, blues, country... whatever I feel like playing! Hope...Read More...
Hi John Seth, the forum seems to be a bit quiet at the moment and you've had no answer to your question. Maybe this will help you on your way to finding something that works for you. Whenever I've not found an "obvious" preset for a guitar I've gone through them all (not tweaking at first) and made notes of any that may work. This is the first selection I make. I then do a more detailed selection of using the presets that I've made a note of. This time tweaking the sound until I get the best...Read More...

Dirty Power Havoc on Tonematch

Forgive me if this has been discussed before. Was wondering if anyone has had this experience: We have 4 L1's in our band. Two are L1 Classics and two are L1 Model II's. The Model II's each have their own Tonematch units. The L1's with the Tonematch kept cutting out. For instance, when I would start to sing (while playing my guitar), vocals and guitar would just cut out. If I stopped playing for a few seconds the sound would come back on, but this was happening way too often and our singer,...Read More...

Model 1 No Longer Serviceable - Options?

One of my L1 Model 1's failed recently - I believe the PS1 power supply to be the issue as a quick search reveals this seems to be a common problem, at least with the earlier generation models. After a brief discussion with Bose support, I must say I'm disappointed to learn the Model 1 is "no longer repairable". I was advised of an "exchange" course of action for a Model 2 in a "worst case scenario". As the primary use for my L1's have been for mobile DJ applications, I have some concerns...Read More...
My L1 Classic & my L1/M1 both failed within the last few years. I found no options for repair on either unit. The first was replaced with a L1/M2 refurbished unit for reduced price. The Second was replaced with a brand new L1/M2 unit at a discounted price (the replacement of the older of the two costing slightly more). I have been using both L1/M2's for live shows for a couple years and they sound fine. Even though the Classics (and maybe the L1/M1) were 750W, and the newer models are...Read More...

L1 Model 2 and Line 6 Helix

ST its been awhile since I have been in here. I am in a bit of a quandary. I really like the new Helix from Line6. Has anyone commented about how it sounds with the L1. I have a B2 as well. I just am wondering if I should pick up a L3T from Line6 to use as a guitar amp alongside the L1 or others have said get the Firehawk 1500 for a guitar amp. Absolutely no sweat re " somewhat late in answering....busy time of year at present ". Glad to hear that you're coming to terms with the T1/Helix combination. When I think about the sound we accepted as being good not too many years ago, I find that we've raised our expectations very high in comparison. One thing we should never forget when trying to sort out our sound. Better a good performance with a compromise in sound than a bad performance with really good sound. Anyone using (2) L1 Compacts?

This is really a two-part question: First, I was curious if anyone found themselves doubling-up by using (2) of the L1 Compact units -- either to increase volume or to provide more consistent coverage? I ask this because I am contemplating the L1 Compact; and while I can foresee it working well as a single unit in some venues, I also wonder if I might need to move a bit more air in other situations, and perhaps (2) of the L1c units would do the trick. By this rationale, one might select...Read More...
Hi Paul, yes, thanks it does help. It was just this that I wanted clarity on as I was more than a little surprised at what you wrote earlier. Compared to your impression at the Bose Showcase store. This is what I would have expected at your first hearing at GC. Now you've had the chance to compare the systems and have made the choice that suits your needs. The Model II (or Model 1S) would benefit from the T1 (or any other mixer for that matter) as it has no EQ of any kind when going into the...Read More...

B1 or B2

Hi folks Sadly I had an issue with my L1 Model 2 w B1 which I recently bought and is being replaced this week. The dealer has offered me to upgrade from the B1 to the B2 for no extra money, a kind of goodwill gesture. Part of me says grab the offer with no question but the other part asks if it is really necessary for what I do. Updates for L1 and Tone Match

A friend of mine asked me for help to update his L1 Compact System. He had tried to do that himself for his PA that he had bought in 2010 (assumed). After starting to learn about updating on www.bose.com/musicians I understand - at least to some extend - the trouble he is having as being a not too IT-affin person. For example in the instructions you read about zip-files which you only will find on second or even third level search. So: The web-page is really not easy to use for a musician.Read More...

Two Tonematch Setup

Hi ... Had a thought ... To gain more input channels, and still use the tonematch, what would be the best method, at all if recommended, of chaining two tonematch engines together? For example, using an L1M2B2 per side as a traditional FOH, without using another brand mixer, but we need more than 4 inputs.....can we use 4 inputs on the tonematch 1, master out to ch3/4 input on tonematch 2, and the additional ch 1,2, and 3 on tonematch 2 for a total of 7 input channels? makes tonematch 2 the...Read More...
Hello ST, I cascade two T1s, in the manner I described, when I run the sound at small open mic events where I use my two T1s to mix, so that I can have an overall volume adjustment of all the channels via one Master volume knob, and still be able to individually adjust each channel independently, as necessary. Even after all this time (using the Bose approach) I still find many musicians struggle to mix themselves as they are consumed with all the other things that performing presents to...Read More...

Hi Petey, Thank you for joining the Bose Pro Portable PA Community. If you have an L1® Compact, there is a line-out on the back of the unit. There are also line outs of the L1® Classic and L1® Model I. The L1® Model 1S and L1® Model II do not have line outs, but if you have a T1®, you can connect the T1® to the Power Stand using the ToneMatch port (the usual means of connecting the T1®) and connect the T1® Master Output to a powered speaker. Model 2 power stand shutting off

OK guys I have been having some issues with my new L1 Model 2 which for some odd reason is shutting down during a performance. It shuts down for several seconds every two or three songs, it's actually quite a hindrance. I have tried various suggestions which were explained to me and the same thing is happening. House Concert Setup

Hi - looking for advice on a potential purchase... we host concerts in our living room usually 4-5 times/year. It is usually 1-3 artists and mostly acoustic singer/songwriter. A typical setup might be two vocals, one with a guitar and the other with a keyboard. The room is ~20x30 with high celings (~20ft) and wood floor. We have had as many as 80+ crammed in for a Young Life event, but a more typical crowd would be in the 30-50 range. We have been ok going unplugged in the past - the sound...Read More...
Hi DLR (Dudley Living Room?), Thanks for the information regarding the Facebook page. I've had a look and listen. I love the idea of living room concerts and have done several with my acoustic trio. Preamp or gain device inline before the mic (or line) input on L1 Compact

On one of the forums somewhere I thought I read to the fact that one wants the signal as "hot" as possible prior to the input of the L1 Compact. So picture a Shure SM58 - xlr - Cloudlifter (+25db) - 48volt phantom box - to the mic input on the l1 Compact. Or another way... Shure 58 - xlr - DBX286s - xlr - mic input on l1 compact. In both cases we're just increasing the gain 25 db with Cloudlifter and up to 60 db with the 286s. I guess this would be coming into the L1 Compact as a Line input...Read More...
Y ou can use a preamp to raise the signal level going into the L1® Compact and run the channel volume control lower but this will not increase the maximum outut. Once you exceed the maximum output you will hear clipping distortion. Yes! This answers half the question.... If you want to add character, you can use a mic preamp/processor between the microphone and the L1® Compact input. If that's your goal, then use L1® Compact Channel 2 (1/4" Tip-Ring-Sleeve - it's a balanced input). With the...Read More...

Design question: why extensions and not telescope?

To Bose Designers and Engineers, when designing the L1 compact, why were the use of extensions chosen over a more convenient 'telescoping' design? I'm curious on this point. Telescoping would have several advantages such as a single item to carry [just the base], and a wider range of options when setting the height of the line array. Telescoping could be manual or automated, similar overall to the old car antennas.Read More...

L1 Model II Flashing red light

Hi, I've had my L1 Model II for a few years and have loved it. Today while rehearsing with my band the microphone I had plugged in starting going in and out. I though it was the cable but when I looked at the the base of the system the light began flashing blue and red and the sound would go in and out. I looked online and was trying to update the firmware that currently shows "PS II System EQ:1.04 PS II firmware:1.4" but have had no luck. Is there something I am missing? I appreciate any help!Read More...
Hi Joel, There's one more thing to try. Do you get the flashing red light on the power stand in a different location? It's unlikely, but if the voltage at the outlet is unusually high, the system may react like this. About the cost, it's best to talk to Bose about that on Monday. There's a two year warranty on the power stand. Depending on how long you've had it, you may be covered. STRead More...
