Drums and Percussion

Pt I A while back, in another thread, the question arose about finding a small crossover, to use with a Bose L1 Compact system, and a subwoofer. Another forum member found and suggested the Rolls SX21 tiny crossover . I had been looking for a solution like this for a long time, so I bought a Rolls and tested it, out live with my acoustic drums. It was quite the success. Of course the success probably depended somewhat on the small-ish nature of the venue, meaning that the Compact didn’t have...Read More...

Superior Drummer 2.0 out of Bose L1 Model 2

Has anyone tried this? I know I've seen people play electronic sets out of the Bose, but I'm wondering how it will sound if I preprogrammed the drums, and used my laptop as the drummer. Thanks for any help! BrandonRead More...

thanks again for watching guys! It was fun putting all the clips together as was my plan from the beginning of the summer, play it exactly the same way every time!! dejembe keeps missing hits

i play guitar in a two pc band and my partner plays a dejembe. when the hits get quick the bose L1® Model 1S system with B2 bass and ToneMatch® audio engine doesn't seem to pick up every hit. under "comp/gate" i put it on kickgate 2 fast but still don't catch every hit...any suggestions or ideas of knowledge would be appreciated...thank you in advaceRead More...
Hi etc6, Thank you for joining the Forum. How does the djembe sound when you turn off the KickGate ? The reason I'm asking "KickGate is a Bose® proprietary technology on the T1 ToneMatch® Audio Engine that allows you to raise the level of a kick drum channel while eliminating the risk of feedback from the microphone. In addition, KickGate cleans up the sound of kick drum so that it's tight and clean as it is without amplification. " And so I'm wondering if it KickGate is offering you a...Read More...

Mic'ing a 4pc drum kit with Model II/B2/T1

DrumrPete
I have landed a fill-in gig next month, with a band at a blues festival near St Louis. The band leader has a traditional small PA (Yamaha 12/horn over 18" sub, ZedFX mixer), but wants me to bring my L1 and mic up the drums. I have a small Gretsch jazz kit that I have set up and tuned to NOT be loud. At rehearsal last week, it was apparent, I was going to get buried by the guitars. So, my question is about what you other drummers are doing, if you mic your toms and snare. So far, I only mic...Read More...
THIS IS A RE-POST from a question asked by pkmaecd in the Ask Bose section of the L1 Users Forum. Parenthesis in quotes are mine to help clarify. quote: posted Tue April 09 2013 10:36 PM by pkmaecd I just purchased a Roland TD 30 KV kit and a (used) Bose model 2 L1 with T1 and 1 (B1) bass unit. quote: When I kick a little harder to get more volume, the T1 system seems to(for lack of a better word) bark or cut to a different pitch...as though perhaps it cant take that much low?? I lose that clear low sound that I should be getting. I have never experienced that problem with my E-drums. To me it sounds like a sound module issue, not the L1...knowing what I know now. That, or you might be over-driving the input on the T1's channel, are you seeing a red LED light? When I mic my...Read More...
I gig with both a Model II/B2 or a Compact, depending on the gig, and the need for mic'ing the kick. It's becoming apparent that positioning of the B2 is very important, maybe more so than B1s. I've found this before, but now realize that it is most always better to place the B2 away from the back wall. We'd always been told you get more bass when a B1 is against-the-wall, but with the B2's added range/output, it seems that it works better in the position I am showing in the picture below.Read More...
Hi Lake Guy, I'm not going to suggest which way is better - but you if you are in a mood to experiment: Try connecting the B1s directly to the Model II Power Stand and the B2 to the A1 PackLite. Note: The B2 Bass Level Switch will have no effect. Try connecting the B2 directly to Model II Power Stand and the B1s to the A1 PackLite. ... and try different settings on the B2 Bass Level Switch. And another thought... consider putting a single B1 on each of the L1 Model I systems for the guitar...Read More...

cables for v drums

grannydrums
Got to do some more experimenting to get it right. Yesterday just as I was leaving, i connected the v drums to the T1 using the Dj mix and that was good, but a bit of a hum when not playing. Then i tried connecting the mono output to the powerstand, and the hum was terrible. Did not have time to experiment with the trim, but it was good and green. Could it be the cable? I just picked up the nearest guitar cable. Should I use something different? The stand says analogue input, and I usume the...Read More...
Hi Grannydrums, Found the manual for the Roland TD-10 . It doesn't specify whether the outputs are balanced or not, and from that, it seems likely that the outputs are unbalanced. I just saw Drumr's post so I think we can drop the "balanced or unbalanced" line of thought.Read More...

Splitting three drum mics into a single channel of the T1

DrumrPete
Anyone mic’ing their drums using a “Y” splitter into a single channel of the T1? Bose suggested this for use with the T1 and I have been doing it for some time now. Contrary to the recommended “SM57 Differential” preset, and placing the mics a few feet overhead near the floor tom and hi-hat, I’ve been using a *Close-mic’ing* technique. Using the overhead method, I could get a bit of mid/high end reinforcement, but didn’t feel that the highs were what I needed to hear more of…not from my...Read More...
at tonights rehearsal everyone agreed that they liked the sound of the bass drum through the mixing board and into the tone match. much better than the bass preset on the t1. so i think i am going to forget about using channels 1-3 for drum mics and just use the mixing desk into channel 4, means taking an extra bit of kit along, but i might be able to downsize the mixing desk. and the bass player will be pleased because she might be able to use my system rather than her amp.Read More...

How to mic up full kit on t1

grannydrums
Hi, currently I run four mic into the band PA system (kick, snare and two toms) occasionally I also have an overhead to pick up the crash. I see...and believe you are the first lady drummer on the forum! Welcome! Yes, the bass drum needs mic'ing, I have to do it too. I play heel down and don't have a ton of power in my foot, the L1 helps greatly. I stack my 2-B1s, and put a cushion on top to use as a drum throne, saves one piece of kit. Every little bit helps.Read More...

Learning to work with drums & the Compact - an ongoing adventure

DrumrPete
I didn't think the Compact was going to work for drummers in any big way, but I might have been wrong. I'm heading out on vacation today, 1,100 mile drive to Savannah, Ga. My wife has always wanted to go there, she loves houses and architecture. Forum member, Roy , lives there too, and I love to play music. So this should be a best-of-both-worlds vacation. On my last vacation to the Bose Bash at Little Switzerland I took my drum kit and two Model IIs. This vacation it's just The Compact, a...Read More...

so i show up to rock gig with a cocktail style drumkit and a model 2 with 2 b2s for fun. my kick sounded so good the band told me to turn up. thats a huge compliment. i also let the lead singer sing though the bose too. and keyboards as well. we had an amazing gig and they said it was the best theyd ever sounded. ive noticed that when sharing an L1 you can top out a b2 before the array tops out. thats part of the reason ive been using two b2s... bringing two b2s out worked out real well...Read More...

Vdrums & Acoustic Cymbals

lake_guy
Was looking through the forum at some old posts about acoustic cymbals and am hoping to get some updated info from forum members about the topic. Here's my situation. I've been playing Vdrums (first a TD12 and the last 2.5 yrs a TD20X) for the last 4 years. Prior to that there was a break of nearly 15 years from playing acoustics which literally had thousands of hours of play/practice time on them. Since moving to the vdrums I've been reasonably happy with the experience and playing through...Read More...
It's been a few months since my original post so thought I would provide an update. For those that are currently using acoustic cymbals do you mic them and in what scenarios? I purchased a set of Paiste 14" Twenty Seies hi-hats. Nice dark sound and defined "chic" sound. They play well with all kinds of music. Also purchased a Paiste 20" Power Ride. Both of these cymbals have a lot of cutting power through the mix so I haven't had any scenario where I've had to mic them. Is the overall band...Read More...

TD20KX, Tonematch and Drum Masters Software

Hello, I have been gigging with my TD20 and L1 Model II with Tonematch (two subs only) for about 18 months now. The sound has always been 'ok' but not 'brilliant'. This is for all the reasons that many of you have discussed in this forum - the Roland sounds epic through headphones, but without fairly substantive tweaking, it can be very over-processed when coming out the Bose (not the fault of the Bose I hasten to add!). I have tried all the various tweaks that have been suggested in the...Read More...
Excellent point on the mixer controls, they are a must have. With the TD-20 I have a couple more sliders than my 12 had so that's really nice. Also, with the 20 I've got 8 outs I use for recording (don't use midi) which would take more gear hooked into some laptop config. Wish Alesis or someone would take the dock concept and add: -- sliders for live mixing -- 1/4" audio outs (at least 8) That would completely open up the ipad for any software company to build out the drum software.Read More...

T1 engine lack of kick volume

Hi I am a drummer using a 'classic' L1 system, and have recently added the T1 mixer to my set up. I have my vocals and my kick drum through the pole. The problem I am having is getting a decent level of volume from the pole using the T1. I am using an AKG D112 mic, and have set this up using the kick2 gate. I have got the gain on the T1 set so that it turns yellow, and then output via the main output jack out to input 3 on L1 base. I am quite a heavy footed player, so there is no issue with...Read More...
Just off the subject, but relative to the subject at hand. It was mentioned not to put the kick drum through a pair of Compacts. I have and can do this with ease. However, it does use some cleverness. I am using a ddrum trigger Mic with an Alesis DM5 drum module. It isn't super low and I can still hear it in the upper section of the Compacts. But, it is nice and at times I need to turn the.kick down. As far as running it through the T1 directly, it hasn't been done with either of my kick...Read More...

model 1 vs model 2 for vdrums?

Hi friends, im new here and hoping for some advice. I have a roland vdrum kit - dont play out anymore, just a hobby and teaching my kids. i have always used bose headphone with my vdrum and am ready for an amp. I had a simmons vdrum amp - it was terrible; got a roland tda-700 although better, still not happy. Im sure im spoiled from the headphones, but would like something decent.. Need help soundproofing. Preferably cheap.

So I currently have the luxury of an unattached garage, and like anyone with one should, bought an acoustic kit to replace my electric one. Bought a bunch of moving blankets in hopes of dampening some of the sound but still it is not as quiet on the outside as I would like. Trying not to <<annoy>> the neighbors. The space I am trying to "soundproof" is the back half of an unattached garage. It is about 10'x 10' with 8' ceilings. I've already covered 5 sides in the blankets. Is...Read More...

L1 COMPACT, The Energy ESW M8 Sub, and the Porchboard Bass

DrumrPete
I love my Compacts, but have always been disappointed in the Compact's reproduction of low end as it applies to the Porchboard Bass. Many of you guitarists have found it workable, others, not so much. OLDGHM said it best when he said the Porchboard/Compact sound is "more of a THUD than a BOOM(p)"...and I agree. I've listened to some recordings by ST where the subtle use of the Porchboard by a guitarist, can be quite effective. While it's fine for a gentle pulse behind the acoustic guitar, I...Read More...
Decision made...sold the M8 on eBay just now. It cost me about $80 to try it out after eBay/Paypal fees, about 20%, and that's reasonable. Two reasons I sold it: 1) Not enough headroom 2) M8 is not built-for-the-road I could have bought speaker grills, but then, how to protect the switches and pots on the rear of the sub. Just not worth, the hassle to keep the M8 safe, and the expense for the limited amount of added sub bass. No question that the M8 is worthy for DJ uses, just not for this...Read More...

Taye Go-Kit

I moved my Taye Go-Kit to the rehearsal room yesterday - because our drummer was tired of hauling his kit to rehearsal and then not having enough stuff to practice at home if he decided to leave stands, cymabals and pedals at the rehearsal space. We had a full volume rehearsal - and the Taye kit really cut through nicely. Amazingly loud for such a small set. We had...Read More...
