Upright Tone Lessons From Ron Carter

colcliff-at-bose
Yesterday, I had the honor of working with jazz legend Ron Carter, helping him use the Personalized Amplification System(R) and in doing so, received more of my continuing education about instrument tone. Yesterday was the first of 3 shows at the Lincoln Center/Rose Theater in Manhattan, called "Detroit Motor City Jazz" starring Ron himself and a full lineup of supreme jazz royalty headliners, all from Detroit. The list includes Geri Allen, Marcus Belgrave, Chris Fuller, Charles McPherson,...Read More...
Thanks for the kind words Jeff. Yeah, there are a few people who seem to leave a permanent impression on me whenever I see them perform, and Ron Carter is definitely one of them.Read More...

Ron Carter workshop at David Gage's shop in NYC

jesse-at-bose
Greetings fellow bassists. I just got back from a really inspiring workshop given by Ron Carter at David Gage’s bass shop in Manhattan. First, a little background for those of you who might not be familiar with these names: Ron Carter is one of the most distinguished, accomplished, acclaimed jazz bassists out there in the world today, with a discography that reads like a history of recorded jazz over the last 50 years. As for David Gage, his shop is a real nerve center for the world of...Read More...

active upright bass

Hello every body Just wondering if anyone has any experience with using any of those stick type upright basses with the onboard pre-amp/controls through either the L1 or the compact. I have a compact sitting there doing nothing.......... just how it would work with one and would be ok to play one through Thanks in advance for any replies VincentRead More...
Hi Vincent, I've run electric bass guitars directly into my L1® Compact many times with excellent results. This was in acoustic music oriented shows, not full band situations. I think you'll be fine with your EUB (Electronic Upright Bass) as long as you're not expecting really big bass response. The L1® Compact goes down to 65 Hz (-3dB). That's a C2. Your low E string is E1, about 41 Hz. But despite what the numbers suggest, you will hear the fundamental notes on your E string. Just not...Read More...

Tech 21 Bass Fly Rig

I have never owned a Sansamp, but this looks pretty interesting. Go figure, I just got the Ampeg Scambler and this comes along. I am very happy with the Scrambler so far. Also, still have the MXR M-80, for backup. http://youtu.be/FHiKIpcUqfcRead More...

Electric bass, acoustic and electric upright bass...

My search for a good amplified tone is a never ending story. I find the ToneMatch patches for electric bass not that useful, so the latest adition is an EBS ValveDrive DI I use to inject some "organic life" into the ToneMatch. It makes wonder for the "authentic feel of a bass amplifier", and still using the benefits of the ToneMatch, like compressor. My NS CR4M electric upright works very well with the NS patches/tonematches, so that goes straight into the mixer. The acoustic upright then,...Read More...
I was using the MXR M-80, but just got the Ampeg Scrabler DI for Christmas. So, looking forward to trying it out.Read More...

Double Bass amp - anyone else using L1 mod 2 plus B2?

After lots of experimentation with my double-bass, I have settled on L1 model 2 with a B2 bass bin as my amplification for live music with ToneMatch, mixing Kent Armstrong mag pickup and AKG 411P contact condenser mic. I play in quite loud jazz/standard 3-piece with 1 - 3 vocals that uses 2 x L1 model 1s with 4 x B1 for PA inc Roland digi-drums and Hammond/Piano. Anyone else out there using L1 for double bass?Read More...
I've used my L1 model 2 with two B1's for my NS CR4M electric upright a lot of times: excellent! Now I've got me a big acoustic real wood bass equipped with the Realist pickup, but haven't gotten int using it live yet. I'll get back when I have done so. As you may have read in another thread, I'm not into the B2 at all, I like the tone of the B1's better.Read More...

Bass guitar. B2 vs b1

I think I should rent a B2 and try it for my Bass guitar before buying a new one, I do like the sound of my two B1s.Read More...
I say definitely try before you buy if you can. I have choice of 2 x B1 and 1 x B2 for my bass rig and use as PA with L1 model 2. The B2 is definitely more solid at low frequencies, giving my double-bass more "thump". I would say the B2 is better all round and really not heavy to carry.Read More...

Bass Player Discovers T1

In the rehearsal room tonight, our bass player was commenting that the major difference btw his sound through the Bose and his sound through his favorite amp is that the G string sounds thin through the Bose. Also when he slaps and pops - the pops are insanely loud when he gets the level high enough that the slaps are audible. I once again suggested that instead of going direct into the L1 M1 base - as he has done since we got this system back in June - that he go into the T1 and let it work...Read More...
Sun, Couldn't agree more. Love the sound of my bass rig, but the L-1 equipped with a T1 & a B2 bottom is superb. On one of our early gigs with the unit, I shared an L-1 with my keyboard player as our mutual back-line gear because of space constraints in the house. He has a solo at the end of a Smash Mouth tune we cover ("Can't Get Enough of You," I think) and the bottom end of his keyboard used to disappear with his rig. The L-1 just leveled us with how full, tight and non-boomy the...Read More...

I love my B2!

Hi kids! I got the BOSE Model 2 system a few years ago, with the little mixer and I got 2 of the B1 Sub-woofers. It sounded nice, but I play bass half the time and felt like I would probably fry the little-bitty woofers in the B1 cabs. Anyway, I play in Saint Augustine, Florida, which is a very touristo city due to the fact that it's the oldest city in the USA! So there are lots of little clubs to play, lots of small ones and several big places, along with numerous outdoor gigs on piers and...Read More...
That's called "a nightmare!" Glad you are enjoying your B2 driven system, I too am very happy with mine. Welcome to the forum, let us know how the gigs go...always interesting to read the gig reports. I've been a user since '04, with never a failed gig. PeteRead More...

Your favorite T1 preset for bass

albanyeric
Although the T1 bass presets are not necessarily models of amps (maybe in the future?), the changes in eq in conjunction with the L1 system enable me to play direct into the T1 without a preamp for the gig. I have found that I like Active Bass 2, The '66 P, the '69 J, and the NS Bass-dark settings (depending on the room). Am I missing any bass hidden gems in the T1?Read More...

Question about the Tone Match "channel strips"...

Mostly I use my ToneMatch mixer when I play duo with my wife, but when playing bass I often go analog in with a preamp and leave the ToneMatch at home. I feel the ToneMatch affects the signal/tone even in bypass mode. My question is: - Is there any kind of pre shape/charachter built into the system? I like to taylor my tone from "zero" and not from "unfamiliar parameters", if you got my point. I also got the impression there is a built in "happy face eq" in the whole system. Am I right or is...Read More...

Using Model 2 with non-BOSE subs

johnnycrab
We have 5(was 6) Model 1's that are gradually being replaced with Model 2's. I use 4 B1's normally but tried the new Model 2 with a non-BOSE sub Monday night before we put it to use. The non-BOSE sub pushed more air and "feel" so I was considering using it in larger places. Does the Model 2 have an internal "active EQ" made for the B1's/B2's that can be bypassed like the Model 1's(1/4" insert trick IIRC) but still use the internal amp & crossover? Thanks for your assistance! PS: The...Read More...
Thanks!! We've got a trailer load of B1's so 2~4 of those will be used when my PS1 gets replaced. I've not tried a B2 but do have 2x10 cabinets with similar weight(ACME's) but not useful due to their power-hungry, watts/dB requirement. The cabinets I tried are a 2x15(stood vertically) and then a 1x18. Both worked well in a large living room and will be tested outdoors here(my yard is a large pasture!) as the main purpose is to get the 40~140 Hz tossed with as much authority as the BOSE...Read More...

The new B2 sub...

I got the opportunity to play through the new B2 sub instead of my two B1 subs. I used it at a church gig and a restaurant gig. My conclusion is the two B1's sound better than one B2. It rumbled a lot and lacked all the focused lows the smaller B1's have. Also I got the impression that the tonal balance of the system wasn't as good as with the two B1's. I am satisfied with my two B1 subs for my bass playing. The smaller elements can do some magic that needs skilled engineers to get right.Read More...
Well he won't have the lower array screaming into his ears that's for sure. I also think that there is a vertical dispersion of 10 degrees or so with the Model 1S (I believe the Compact has a 40 degree vertical) - so even though the speaker array may be above his ears, he should be able to get some of the sound as it will be directed downwards that 10 degrees.Read More...

Upright Bass mic and pickup

I have 3/4 size acoustic upright bass (double bass). I experimented with piezo pickups wedged in the bridge and didn't like that. I fitted a Schaller pickup on the neck and mixed this with piezo through a Headway pre-amp - better but still not good. I now have an AKG Mic AKG C 411PP stuck on the bridge (position important) through input 1 of L1 model 1 (phantom power on - required for the AKG) and the Schaller pickup Schaller through Headway pre-amp to input 2. The sound is now really nice.Read More...
Wow Timbass, you seem to have the upright bass sound sorted - way beyond Mr average. Thankyou for posting! I can't offer help, only adulation for your attention to detail, willingness to experiment and enthusiasm to share. Let me tell you that the Bose L1 stuff is the best! I love upright bass. I don't own one but I have an electric upright bass that I wish I could play properly. Your post may help me to find an inspiring setting to send to my Bose L1 to make my shoddy finger style sound ok.Read More...

Has anyone tried running 2 B1's with 1B2 and a packlite?

madcatbassist
I have been using 2B1's with my Model 1 for almost 2 years now, and last Saturday night I blew one of the drivers in one of the B1's. Bose is taking good care of me on the repair, but now I am concerned. There was no indication of a problem until it let go. was quite unexpected. WE Have 4 L1's total in a 5 pc Variety Cover band. trying to decide between 2 more B1's and packlite or a B2 and packlite. Also, That Packlite is pretty expensive for a 250 watt amp. Has anyone tried another power...Read More...
Did an outdoor gig with 2 guitars bass and drums, with the 2 B1 plus Packlite to 1 B2, all out of an L1 Classic. Very happy with the tone and volume, with both a Beatle bass and a Fender Jazz 5. The low B was tight and well resolved. Best of all, the neighbors called the police due to the excessive bass output! And this was in a rural area acres away from any neighbors!Read More...

Tone Match Lakland preset...

The Lakland preset works really fine with my Lakland, even if the preset is made for the 44-01/55-01 basses with dual Bartolini humbuckers. My 55-94 has the "classic" Lakland MM/J setup, but that doesn't matter, works fine without tweaking. The one who made the preset did a great job.Read More...

L1 Model II Base input and Upright Bass for bluegrass band, help with mics or pick up

Can anyone tell me what the bass input is for on the L1 Model II base. My bluegrass band has 2 B1's. We use a Mackie ProFx 16 soundboard. I play the upright bass and have a Realist pick up on my bass. I plug straight into the soundboard channel. First, I don't think this Realist pick up is a good solution. I have a problem hearing my bass period, through the system. I keep turning up the gain and volume and eventually you will hear it, but then its sound is not authentic. An odd sound. I've...Read More...

Acoustic Duo w/Compact

Hey Guys, I have been away from the forum awhile. New project in the works due to drummers not being able to remain sober or too demanding. Me and the guitar player have been doing a duo project with the Compact. I dont have an acoustic bass and have been using my acoustic guitar, which allows me to play some chords when needed. I recently decided to plug my bass back in. I have been experimenting abit. Plugged it straight in. Also put my Zoom B3 in line. Out of curiousity I tried my Boss...Read More...

Zoom B3

I just recently posted a similar post on the Zoom G3 in the Guitars column. I have both, but have not really tried them out yet with the L1. If anyone has used a B3, would love to hear what your settings are. Also, if you are using a T1, what are the setting there. I will be trying them out myself pretty soon and will report back as well.Read More...
Been away for awhile. I have done some more experimenting recently. I have been using the 1/4 out of the Zoom vs. the DI out with great success. Plugging into the T1, I dont use any presets on that. As you said, plugging a modeler into a modeler, just does not make any sense. Still need to play around with the settings on the Zoom, as far as what I want to use for certain songs, but coming along nicely.Read More...

Hi Bass Mayhem, I remember when you did your bass speaker shoot out and you went to your local store Musikbörsen to do it. I think this would be a really good exercise: to go to Musikbörsen, to audition the sound of 4 B1s. If they don't have an A1 PackLite amplifier in stock, you can get a close approximation how the sound by using a Model II Power Stand as the amplifier. You would run a balanced cable from your Model II Power Stand Bass Line Out to the other Model II Power Stand Analog...Read More...
