Being primarily a wedding DJ, portibility has always been key. A small car, the easy load in and set up has been great. The compacts took the portability to a new level. Cocktail hours, ceremonies, and then the ability to do smaller gigs like retail, office gigs, karaoke, backyard parties even easier. Also using the compact for fill when needed was great too. The S1 has stepped it up even more. The battery powered just adds to the simplicity. Had a few days this year when I did 2 gigs in a...Read More...

Paul Schaefer's L1 Set Up

Today I had the privilege of visiting the David Letterman set and learning more about how Paul Schaefer is using the L1 Classic that you have seen beside him for years. The system is fed by a sub-mix of all of Paul’s keys and synths enabling him to hear himself clearly on stage. Pat Metheny Group and the Bose L1 System

bobK88, I have been using the L1 Compact for about 8 or 9 years now, about 10 to 15 gigs per month. I, like the drummer, play (solo) from a stool when I gig, and place my L1 on a chair slightly behind and off to the side. For that reason, using only 1 extension gives me a better mix of bass and upper speakers. I set it up this way probably 95 % of the time and have never had a problem with that. If I have more space between me and the compact I sometimes use both extensions but rarely. I...Read More...

Succeeding in the Performing Arts: Introduction

Ken-at-Bose
Hi Folks, For the past few years, we've had discussions amongst the moderators and others about the idea of collecting our experiences in the performing arts (mostly live music) into some short essays that might help to disseminate the knowledge. The time has come to begin this effort. Each "lesson learned" will be a new thread, whose title will begin with "SUCCEEDING IN THE PERFORMING ARTS" followed by a colon and few words about the topic. We are completely comfortable, in fact we are...Read More...

L1 Model I - Preset 3.0 Patch (DJ's only)

Attention DJ’s using the L1™ model I system, We recently identified an isolated issue that only affects DJ’s that are using Preset #58 (High Volume Pre Recorded Music) on the L1™ model I system. It was discovered that L1™ model I power stands with a serial number less than 042829Z72550001AC did not accurately contain the advertised preset #58. This preset is specifically intended for DJ’s playing pre recorded music at higher volume levels. Instead, it contained a flat EQ setting which is...Read More...

NATIONAL DJ ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT REVIEW

I just wanted to report on my first weekend of using my new BOSE system. I use the word power in parenthesis because two different meanings for the same word were revealed to me this past weekend. On Friday Night I had an event at my local NFL Stadium out on the field. I have done this event for the previous 4 years so this was my 5th and first with the BOSE system. The sound that came out of those two towers and 4 B1s was something like I have never heard before. It literally filled the...Read More...

L1 Benefits Statement

Ken-at-Bose
Hello Everyone, We wrote this before we introduced our new approach to live music amplification. These words appear on many of the cartons in the L1 family of products. We thought it would be good to repeat these words here.Read More...
This is an example of some of the old "Gems" which are turning up since the introduction of the new forum software. The words are as true now as they were then. Here's an example. My wife had a birthday party in January and I set up the Compact+T1 so that I could play easily for our guests and be heard anywhere in our living room which is L-shaped and about 50m2. Due to illnesses and bad weather forecast (snow) the party wasn't too big an affair and I could have played without amplification.Read More...

@andrewdouglas , I get your opinion about "eating the mic". That holds true with an SM58 and similar mic's. Steve Miller Band and Cylindrical Radiator(r) speakers

Ken-at-Bose
Some of us in the Live Music Technology Group recently went to see and hear the Steve Miller Band play at the Tweeter Center in Boston, a summer shed holding about 18,000 people. Steve has purchased a number of Cylindrical Radiator speakers over the past 18 months and has written us to tell us of his experiences with them. (With his permission, we've posted these HERE ). We did not realize until we arrived at the Tweeter Center that he was using the two most recently puchased double bass...Read More...
Even better than the 'patented' solution in the above post would be a simple wooden doorstop, because you could adjust the angle of declination of the sound pattern. Line array loudspeakers oriented vertically are 'aimed' to play to an audience that is an infinite distance away. To aim your L1 in such a way that plays with full volume to all rows of the audience, put a laser pointer on top of your L1 (or imagine one there) and insert the doorstop underneath the rear edge of the Power Stand...Read More...

L1 Compact in use with Gypsy Jazz meets Hendrix

Seagullman
Hi Everybody, I just stumbled across this and thought it might interest a few people on the forum. I've seen the guitarist in the foreground live and think he's phenomenal. The Bass player Dylan Taylor should be well known to jazz fans in and around Philadelphia. This version of "Hey Joe" is a bit different to most covers and may not be for everyone's ears. I think it's brilliant. The sound is what we would expect from an L1 system when supplied with good quality signals. Acoustic but loud...Read More...

Hi, Tony. Thanks for the interesting question. It's great you are looking for ways to improve the sound for a live rock band. When you add two more F1 Model 812s, place the new F1 Model 812s where you need the sound (not bundled together in pairs with the existing systems). You don't gain much by placing two F1 Model 812s together (side-by-side or stacked) in one location. Updates for L1 and Tone Match

A friend of mine asked me for help to update his L1 Compact System. He had tried to do that himself for his PA that he had bought in 2010 (assumed). After starting to learn about updating on www.bose.com/musicians I understand - at least to some extend - the trouble he is having as being a not too IT-affin person. For example in the instructions you read about zip-files which you only will find on second or even third level search. So: The web-page is really not easy to use for a musician.Read More...

Electric guitar amp simulators plugins-getting the right sound?

Lately I have seen videos on youtube of people using plugins like Neural DSP or Positive Grid bias amp that sound incredible, but they are using studio monitors and not typical PA equipment. Hi, Carlos de Castro. Welcome to the Bose Portable PA Community. Thanks for the interesting question.
